We are comparing MacBook models

In today’s blog post, we’ll take a closer look at Apple’s MacBook laptops.
We’ll compare several models – the MacBook Pro with the M1 chip from 2020 and the Intel-based MacBook Pro from 2020, as well as the MacBook Air with the M1 chip from 2020 and the Intel-based MacBook Air from 2020. Finally, we’ll compare the M1 MacBook Air and the M1 MacBook Pro – again from the year 2020.

We’ve focused on models from 2020 because, nowadays, they are among the most affordable MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models both in terms of price and performance. The M1 variants of MacBooks have now become very close in price to the Intel models, while significantly outperforming them – in some cases by at least double the performance.

1. MacBook Air M1 vs MacBook Air Intel

We start with a comparison between the M1 Air and the Intel Air from 2020. There’s no visual difference between the two models – both have identical ports and the same exterior. Perhaps the only notable difference is that the MacBook Air M1 comes in a rose gold color, which tends to be very popular among female users. There is also a slight difference in thickness and weight between the two models.

The most noticeable difference lies in the performance of the MacBook Air M1. It delivers 50% better performance compared to the Intel MacBook Air. This is also the first Air model to feature a built-in GPU. The display and battery remain the same across both models – 13.3 inches with 2K resolution. However, the M1 version offers around 30% longer battery life, thanks to the greater efficiency of the M1 chip. The Intel processor consumes more power and energy, making it less efficient. In practical terms, the M1 MacBook Air lasts between 15 and 18 hours, while the Intel version typically lasts between 10 and 11 hours with normal usage. Another major difference, besides the processor, is the price – the M1 model is about 300 BGN more expensive.

2. MacBook Pro M1 vs MacBook Pro Intel

Looking at the two Pro models from 2020, again we see similarities in weight and design. Visually, they are nearly identical, with no significant distinguishing features. Both laptops weigh around 1.4 kg, which is very light and close even to the weight of the MacBook Air – just 100 grams heavier. The MacBook Pro definitely feels more professional in design.

The biggest difference between the Pro models is in their performance. In 2020, Apple finally launched its own chip, marking a major milestone. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 chip performs on par with the 15-inch Intel MacBook Pro from 2019. Both the M1 and Intel Pro models from 2020 have good battery life, but again, the M1 version offers 30% longer runtime thanks to its more efficient chip. Another major advantage is that the M1 chip provides far better data and graphics processing. The M1 Pro is definitely the right choice for those who want a compact laptop with serious performance.

In terms of similarities – both Pro versions have the same displays, chassis, and keyboards. Functionally, there aren’t huge differences apart from performance. A notable feature, though, that the MacBook Pro offers over the Air (and is well-liked by users) is the Touch Bar.

3. MacBook Air M1 vs MacBook Pro M1

Here we see more substantial differences. The key one is that the Pro version always features an 8-core GPU, while the Air may have either a 7-core or 8-core GPU, depending on the model. Another differentiating feature we mentioned is the Touch Bar, which adds convenience in the Pro models. Both laptops come with Touch ID, but that’s not a new feature for MacBooks.

Another major difference between the M1 Air and M1 Pro is cooling. The Air uses passive cooling and tends to heat up during prolonged use. The Pro, however, features active cooling with a fan, providing better heat dissipation for the processor and the entire motherboard. As for battery life, both models last between 16 and 18 hours with normal use. Both displays are 13.3-inch 2K panels. However, the Pro display is slightly brighter, making it more suitable for well-lit environments.

In terms of price, both models are very close. The same applies to the two Air models (M1 and Intel) and the two Pro models (M1 and Intel) from 2020 – they offer very similar configurations.
