AI laptops in 2026: Marketing or real revolution?
Over the past two years, laptop manufacturers have barely mentioned processors, RAM, or SSDs. Instead, we’ve been seeing the new buzzwords AI Laptop or AI PC everywhere.
Microsoft, Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, Lenovo, HP, Dell, and ASUS are investing billions in a new generation of devices equipped with specialized AI processors (NPUs). But is this a real change in the way we use our computers, or just another marketing campaign to convince us to replace our fully functional laptop?
The truth, as is often the case, is somewhere in the middle.
What exactly is an AI laptop?
Simply put, an AI laptop is a computer that has specialized hardware for processing tasks related to artificial intelligence.
The key component is the so-called NPU (Neural Processing Unit) – a processor designed specifically for AI calculations. Unlike CPUs and GPUs, NPUs are optimized to run AI models with minimal power consumption.
Microsoft introduced the Copilot+ PC standard, according to which a laptop must have NPU performance of at least 40 TOPS (trillion operations per second), a minimum of 16 GB of RAM and an SSD drive.
In practice, this means that many of the new models with processors:
Intel Core Ultra
AMD Ryzen AI
Qualcomm Snapdragon X
now fall into the category of AI laptops.
Why are manufacturers betting so heavily on AI?
The reason is simple – classic improvements no longer impress users.
Ten years ago, a new processor could be twice as fast as the previous one. Today, the difference between generations is often difficult to notice in everyday work.
AI offers a new selling story:
automatic document summarization;
real-time translation;
image generation;
intelligent search on the computer;
local launch of language models;
AI assistants for work and learning.
For manufacturers, this is an opportunity to create a new reason to upgrade hardware.
Where do AI laptops really change the game?
1. Better autonomy
One of the most underrated benefits is lower power consumption.
When AI tasks are performed by the NPU instead of the CPU or GPU, the battery lasts significantly longer. This is especially important for business users, students, and people who work on the go.
2. Better privacy
More and more AI functions are performed locally, without the data leaving the device.
Instead of sending your documents to cloud servers, processing can be done directly on the laptop. This is an important advantage for businesses, lawyers, accountants, and users who work with sensitive information.
3. Local AI models
In 2026, more and more small language models can run directly on the laptop without an internet connection.
This allows for:
Offline AI chat assistants;
Local text generation;
Document analysis;
Workflow automation;
Programming with AI assistants.
The development of more compact models is making AI laptops increasingly useful for real-world tasks.
Where is marketing still ahead of reality?
Despite the huge hype surrounding the AI PC category, there are also serious arguments from skeptics.
Lack of enough applications
The most common criticism is that the hardware is already here, but the software is still catching up.
Many users buy an AI laptop without actually using features that load the NPU on a daily basis. Some of the promised capabilities are still being developed, and many popular AI tools continue to rely mainly on cloud services.
"AI" is everywhere
By 2026, almost every new premium laptop will already meet the requirements for an AI PC.
This has led to an interesting paradox - when all devices are AI devices, the term begins to lose its marketing power. Some analysts even note that manufacturers are gradually putting emphasis on specific AI capabilities, rather than on the "AI PC" logo itself.
Not everyone needs an AI laptop
If you use your laptop primarily for:
browsing;
YouTube;
Netflix;
Office documents;
email;
the difference between a good laptop from 2022–2023 and a new AI model may be minimal. For many users, buying an AI laptop will not bring a dramatic change in daily work.
What will happen in the coming years?
Most likely, the term "AI laptop" will gradually disappear.
Similarly, today no one advertises devices as "Wi-Fi laptops" or "multi-core laptops". The technology will simply become standard.
We are already seeing a trend towards devices that can run AI agents locally and work as intelligent assistants, rather than just traditional computers. Big tech companies are investing heavily in this direction.
In a few years, we will probably not ask if a laptop has AI. We will take it for granted.
Is it worth buying an AI laptop in 2026?
The answer depends on how you work.
An AI laptop is a good investment if:
you use Copilot, ChatGPT, or other AI tools on a daily basis;
you work with large volumes of information;
you create content;
etc.
you program;
you want the longest possible battery life;
you plan to use the device for at least 4–5 years.
You don't necessarily need to replace your laptop if:
your current model works well;
you use the computer mainly for basic tasks;
you don't use AI tools in your daily life.
AI laptops in 2026 are not just a marketing gimmick, but they also don't represent the revolution that advertisements sometimes promise.
The real innovation is in specialized NPU processors, better energy efficiency, and the ability for AI applications to run locally. On the other hand, the software ecosystem is still catching up with the hardware, and many users will not immediately feel a huge difference.
For buyers of refurbished laptops from Hop.bg, this is good news. High-quality business models from recent generations continue to offer excellent performance and reliability at a significantly more affordable price. And when AI functions become a mandatory part of daily work, the transition to the new generation of devices will be much more clearly justified.
