Practical Guide for Choosing a Refurbished Computer (Part 1)
The topic of today's blog post is prompted by customer inquiries and daily questions in our stores. We'll focus on the types of computers available at Hop.bg stores, what to choose, what we'll use it for, and whether it will serve our needs.
1. Types of Computers We Offer
To begin with, we'll introduce you to the types of computers we offer. The main criteria by which we determine the type of computer are the chassis size (which is most important), the computer's intended purpose, and whether we have the possibility to upgrade the hardware configuration itself.
Based on size, computers come in standard Tower, Desktop, and Small Form Factor. Tower (or tower-shaped) computers are the largest in size. Desktop computers are designed to sit horizontally on the desk itself. Small Form Factor and Ultra Small Form Factor are the smallest variants. These are also the most current and used products in recent years that we can encounter in various places in our daily lives. Other types of computers, which we'll address in one of the upcoming articles, are gaming machines and stationary workstations. However, these are completely different, strictly specialized machines.
The choice of computer type comes down to the application of the machine itself and how it will be used by the end user.
2. Tower PC
We start with Tower PC or the computer that perhaps each of us has had at home at some point in our lives. These are among the first representatives of computers. One of their advantages is the chassis size. There is possibility for upgrading. Different components, different power supplies, and different video cards can be installed. There's room for a larger motherboard and for larger cooling. The larger and active cooling is precisely why these computers were most often chosen when purchasing in the past. There is possibility for expansion, thanks to PCI and PCI Express slots. These are located on the motherboard and allow for installation of various hardware devices such as sound cards, LAN cards, and additional disks.
As always, advantages come with their disadvantages. Every advantage of the large chassis and bulky components has its downsides. They collect dust more easily and need more frequent maintenance. In home conditions, and in office environments, there isn't always space to place such a huge case. Another disadvantage is that some are quite bulky, heavy, don't fit well in compact offices, and are difficult to move. They can also be quite noisy, which is one of the signs of dust accumulation in them.
We can add that Tower computers are also quite energy inefficient. They consume much more energy relative to the performance they offer.
3. Desktop PC
The next representatives are Desktop PCs. These computers can be placed on the desk – either under the monitor or in a less visible place. They are somewhat more compact than Tower PCs. However, there is a serious difference in internal space. This limits the choice of components we can use when upgrading the hardware configuration itself. Not all video cards can fit in them. Additional cooling cannot be installed, and we must rely on their cooling, which is significantly less than that in Tower computers.
In terms of performance, Desktop computers correspond to all three variants, used mainly in offices. They can run light multimedia, but nothing demanding like graphic designs can be done.
The disadvantages of Desktop computers are mainly the hardware obstacles for upgrading. The power supply can also be considered a minus. While with Tower computers we have the possibility to change the power supply in watts, here we rely completely on the stock power supply. Desktop computers are very compact, with everything inside made with an exact designated place.
We will pay more detailed attention to the other types of computers in the next blog post.
